History

Panda Express is a food chain company is an offspring company of Panda Restaurant Group. The company was founded by an Asian couple Peggy and Andrew Cherng along with Andrew’s father Ming Tsai Cherng who was the head chef at the first Panda Express restaurant. With the experience of operating a food chain as a chef, Ming Tsai Cherng gave a direction to the restaurant chain towards its success. Andrew and his father Ming Tsai are from the Yangzhou region of China and were raised there. They had the profound taste of the locality and wanted to bring that to America. Andrew went into business with his father in 1973 with opening their first Panda Inn restaurant in Pasadena, California.

With the successful operation of Panda Inn, Andrew became acquainted with a UCLA coach Terry Donahue who was also in real estate business. Terry was able to get Andrew acquainted with the manager of Glendale Galleria, who later asked Andrew to start a fast food version of Panda Inn at the food court of Glendale Galleria. That was the start of the Panda Express in 1983, and then the food chain expanded across the country. Most of the initial Panda Express locations were opened in the food courts of malls and other commercial buildings. The most popular item of the Panda Express menu, the orange chicken is claimed by the Chef Andy Kao to have developed at a Panda Express in Hawaii in 1987.
